The Canterbury Scottish Heritage Council was formed in Christchurch in 1987 by a group of like-minded people keen to preserve and encourage Scottish Heritage within the populace of Christchurch. Membership was drawn from representatives of Clan Societies in Christchurch – Clan Donald, Clan MacLeod, Clan Fraser, Clan Gunn, Clan Campbell, Clan Cameron also representatives from the Scottish Society of NZ, Canterbury Caledonian Society, Canterbury Burns Club.
Two main events on the Heritage Council calendar are the Tartan Day Lunch held in July and the Kirkin o’ the Tartan Church Service in October at St Andrews at Rangi Ruru.
In addition, the Council meet every 3 months informally to discuss events past and events forthcoming. Of note members attend each year the Canterbury Scottish Cultural Festival in February and the Hororata Highland Games in November where members assemble in Clan Alley and set up their tables displaying Clan information and assist the public with queries they may have on their heritage. Also with Clan banners we take part in the opening parade of both events.
Membership is open to anyone who has an interest in their Scottish Heritage and can join any of the Clans that still operate a membership register.
